Setting up ArcGIS
UH
has acquired a campus wide license (RTU – Right To
Use) the ESRI ArcGIS software suite, this entitles us
to use an unlimited number of esri GIS applications
on any of the PCs/workstations on campus and off campus (OFF CAMPUS IS ONLY FOR
UH STAFF NOT STUDENTS).
So
how do I go about using the software?
- First, you
need to get the software from UH main campus library, access http://www.uh.edu/infotech and
follow the software link to learn more; usually you would buy the software
from the TSS customer service desk who accepts Credit Cards, SCRs etc. Make sure you buy what you need, there are
more that 100 CDs for the whole set, if you are windows user you probably
only need the ArcGIS desktop set and the ArcINFO set (about 8 cds)
- Next, you
can install the software on your work PC and during the licensing step you
need to input the internet address of the campus wide license server,
which would validate the software and give you the RTU. Here are the
screenshots of the install process and the point at which you input the
license server address.

- Note the
license manager address “Geossun3.Geosc.UH.Edu”, this is what you input. After
this point just let the installation complete and you will be ready to use
the software.
- You may want
to send an email to jkrishnan@uh.edu
requesting you be added on the mailing list for ESRI license server at UH,
you would be informed of any license server issues that may arise
(downtime, changes etc).
- NOTE: ESRI releases service packs on a
regular basis that would improve the functionality of the ARCGIS software
by providing more features and cleaning up bugs, it is highly recommended
that you install these service packs as and when they are released. Most
of the unusual problems that you encounter with the ARCGIS software can be
solved by installing these service packs. A direct link to the ESRI
support site is
