Note: Support refers to the http://support.geosc.uh.edu website.
Accessing files in your PC account through
other means
Suppose you need to have access to your
files in your PC account from home, from a UNIX account or maybe from another
PC system like your personal desktop/laptop here are your options.
Accessing your files from another PC on campus
- On your remote PC, open up an explorer window and in the
address sections, type in \\geoscdom.geosc.uh.edu
and hit return.
- This usually brings up a window that prompts for a
username and password, at this point input your username and password on
your PC account in the computer lab, like so,

- If you input this information correctly, a window pops up
that contains your home folder. Now you can merely drag-drop, edit files
etc.
- NOTE: If you are in a
class and would like to access your class folder, then key in
“\\geoscdom.geosc.uh.edu\classid”, so for example if you are in geol4331,
enter “\\geoscdom.gosc.uh.edu\geol4331” in the address section of the
explorer window. This is true for
any other folders you are allowed access to like
\\geoscdom.geosc.uh.edu\scanner etc.
- IF YOU ARE ON A PUBLIC PC, MAKE SURE YOU CLOSE ALL WINDOWS
AND LOGOUT to prevent others from accessing your files.
Accessing your files from a PC off campus
The
best way is to setup UHVPN on you home PC or MAC and then use the above method.
To achieve this
- Download and install the
UHVPN software from the following site - http://www.uh.edu/infotech/php/software_downloads.php
. You probably need the VPN client for Windows.
- After you reboot your PC,
start up the VPN client and connect to the UH VPN (virtual private
network). You would be prompted for your Cougarnet
ID and password to connect. Enter it when prompted.

- Once you do this
correctly, your home PC becomes part of the UH network and then you can
connect to your class/home folders like above.
Another more cumbersome method is detailed
below but please use the VPN method as it is the
easiest.
Accessing your file
from off campus is merely doing a Secure FTP to the Geosciences file server and
transferring your files.
- First, you need to have the Secure Shell software
installed on your system. A copy can be downloaded from the Support site,
software section. Access this link. http://support.geosc.uh.edu/software
- Then start up the secure file transfer client,

- After you start up the client software, you will get a
window (shown below), click on the “Quick Connect” button and fill in the
details. The Host name should be “geoscdom.geosc.uh.edu”, the user name
would be whatever your windows login name is.

- After you fill in the details and click on “Connect” you
will be prompted if you want to connect (say YES), after which you will be
immediately prompted for your windows password. Enter your password and
say “OK”

- If you entered all the details (your username and
password) correctly, you will get a window (shown below), that shows your
home PC on the left and your windows account on the right.

- Now you can transfer stuff back and forth by simply
dragging and dropping files or folders as needed, you can also delete
remote files and folders etc. REMEMBER:
Most operations like creating folders, going up a directory level etc can
be access through the “Operation” menu.
IF YOU ARE TAKING A GEOSCENCES CLASS AND WOULD LIKE TO ACCESS YOUR
HOMEWORK OR OTHER CLASS FOLDERS
- Select “Operation” and then “Go to Folder” as shown below
and enter the name of your main class share folder (shown below), make
sure you select your class id, so for example if you are in geol4331, you
would enter “/raid/home/geol4331” (substitute geol4331 with the
appropriate class id).

- Once you do that, you will again get your local pc files
on the left and your remote class folders on your right (shown below),
then you can transfer files back and forth.

- You can always go back to your “Home” folder by clicking
on the “Home” Icon, like so.

Accessing
your files from a UNIX workstation
- Again, this is just transferring files between two UNIX systems
so access http://support.geosc.uh.edu/docs/ssh_ftp.htm,
scroll down and read the section - How
to use Secure FTP to transfer files between UNIX systems, this time
remember the server is geoscdom.geosc.uh.edu, so substitute that for the
server name and you can start transferring files.
