Scanning Documents

1.      Scanning Documents is a multi step process, essentially choose a computer which has a scanner attached to it (these computers are in the multimedia room of the computer lab, 232), login to this system, then place your document to be scanned in the scanner, start ADOBE Photoshop and select "Import" option as shown below, (note: it may not be always “WIA-EPSON Perfection 1640”, since the option will vary depending upon scanner)

2.      Once the Main Scanner window comes up, make sure you select the Document type; then press the preview button to preview the image (check for alignment, orientation etc) and then press the scan button.

OCR Scanning

For OCR (Optical Character Recognition) scanning, or scanning an image containing words or words and graphics and then converting this image to an editable file (good for stealing text), do the following.

1.      Scan the page as you would normally do (as demonstrated above) and then save this as a TIFF file.

2.      Open up Microsoft Document Imaging tool as displayed below

3.      Then select File, Import and locate the TIF file you saved and open the file.

4.      The select Tools, “Recognize Text using OCR” to start the OCR conversion as shown below.

5.      The process starts and you will get a progress bar indicating the conversion status, after it goes through, select Tools again and choose “Send Text to Word” option.

6.      A dialog window pops up asking you the location to save the word file, choose the appropriate location and within a short time, WORD should open up with the converted file. You may want to check for errors as the conversion process may not be a 100% accurate.
